3 killed, 18 wounded in Chicago over weekend -- despite 33 hours without someone shot - NEGRO UNENDING VIOLENCE LEADS TO: 228 shot & wounded in Chicago so far in 2016

Three people were killed and at least 18 others were wounded in Chicago over the weekend, despite a stretch of nearly 33 hours when no shootings were reported in the city.

The toll brings to at least 228 the number of people shot in Chicago so far this year, a 95 percent increase over the same time period last year and a 250 percent increase over 2014, according to data kept by the Tribune.

From Friday evening through Saturday morning, two people were killed and eight others were wounded. From Saturday morning through Sunday, one person was fatally shot and 10 others were wounded.

No one was reported shot from 12:35 a.m. Sunday through early Monday morning, according to Chicago police.

• Among the victims from the weekend was Courtney Taylor, 25, who was shot to death in the lobby of a Hyatt Regency hotel near McCormick Place about 2:20 a.m. Saturday.

He was attending a birthday party with several other men when someone pulled out a gun and shot him several times, police said. He died at the scene.

His mother saw her son's body and ran into the lobby, pleading with officers to let her get closer.  “Please, let me see my son,” the woman yelled near yellow crime tape. “How did this happen? Here? This ain’t Englewood!”
