MARIETTA, Ga. -- One person is dead while a state trooper is recovering at Kennestone Hospital following a shooting on Interstate 75 Wednesday afternoon.
According to Capt. Mark Perry of the Georgia Department of Public safety, State Trooper Jacob Fields spotted a silver black Chevy Silverado driven by 26-year-old Israel Vladimir Rodriguez of Acworth. Fields tried to pull Rodriguez over around 4 p.m., but he refused to stop.
Several other troopers joined the chase over the next 10 miles. As they neared Delk Road, the troopers tried to box Rodriguez in, but he refused to stop. Instead, he crashed into another car and disabled his own truck, police said.
When Rodriguez jumped out, the shootout began. Capt. Perry could not say who fired first.
Fields, who has been a trooper for three years, was shot in the stomach underneath his bulletproof vest and in the ankle. According to officials, Fields was alert and speaking with family at Kennestone Hospital after surgery. He is expected to have a full recovery.
