BROOKFIELD MAN FATALLY SHOT HOURS AFTER TESTIFYING IN CRIMINAL CASE
UPDATE: BROOKFIELD, Ill.-- A suburban community is rattled after someone shot and killed a man while he was sitting in his car, right in front of his home.
Michael Smith, 33, of the 3700 block of Forrest Avenue in Brookfield, was gunned down Wednesday afternoon. He was pronounced dead at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood at 12:46 p.m., according to police.
Police in west suburban Brookfield found a male victim shot in a vehicle when officers responded to a report of shots fired early Wednesday afternoon, according to the village’s website.The website had the following alert: “At 12:09 p.m. the Brookfield Police Department responded to reports of shots fired at the corner of Grant and Forest.”
"Police located a male victim in his vehicle suffering from gunshot wounds and was transferred to receive medical attention. Brookfield Police Department along with local area task force and State Police are currently investigating. Suspects fled the scene in a vehicle."
Dr. Kevin Skinkis, superintendent of Riverside Brookfield High School District 208, said at the request of local authorities his school went into a “shelter in place” procedure in which no one could leave the building and no one could come into the building, but activities and classes in the school went on as normal.
The “shelter in place” remained for 45 minutes before it was lifted.
Brook Park Elementary and S.E. Gross Middle School were placed on a soft lockdown. The lockdown was lifted at 1:25pm today per police recommendation, according to an alert sent to parents.
