An NYPD officer shot and wounded an emotionally disturbed man brandishing a knife inside a Lower East Side public housing building early Tuesday, police said.
The confrontation took place inside a seventh-floor hallway of one of the buildings in the Jacob Riis II complex on FDR Drive near E. 6th St. just before 12:30 a.m.
The man was identified as Julian DeJesus, 25, sources said. He was in critical condition at Bellevue Hospital.
An NYPD sergeant and officer, both assigned to Police Service Area 4, found DeJesus brandishing a knife, cops said. The man ignored the officers’ repeated commands to drop the knife.
“He kept advancing on them in a threatening manner,” an NYPD spokesman said.
